AFC Aluminum Soldering Flux
( Honey Flux )
Can be used with our 7C Tin/Zinc Solder
AFC Honey flux is an amber color, chloride free, organic based flux used
primarily for low temperature soldering of aluminum to aluminum and to
dissimilar metals such as copper, stainless steel and nickel.
The flux has a molasses consistency and should be used full strength. If
dilution is required a 25% mixture (by weight) of ethyl or methyl alcohol
can be used. during high speed mechanized solder operations, the flux can be
diluted with distilled water under certain conditions. all flux preparations
should be stored in a glass or plastic container.
The AFC flux is used most effectively with NEY 7C aluminum solder. The
fluxing action is effective on the surface of the metals to be bonded at a
temperature of 350F to 550F. It is very important to keep the temperatures
below 600 F or a charring of the flux will be visible and no bond will take
place. Overheating must always be avoided.
Conventional soldering techniques can be used. This includes iron,
flame,, furnace and dip soldering. It is critical that the solder tip of the
iron remain below 600F. A rheostat should be used to maintain control and
prevent charring of the flux. If a torch is used, the parts should be
preheated and the flame should not impinge upon the flux or it will burn and
carbonize. Direct the flame just behind the joint so that the heat will
conduct into the joint. When dip soldering, the fluxed aluminum should be
immersed slowly into the solder bath, allowing the flux to react and deposit
heavy metals on the joint to promote proper wetting of the parts to be
bonded.
Flux residue are electrically conductive and slightly corrosive so they
should be removed with hot water or alcohol whenever possible.
