ZINC TIPS Below are some handy tips when working with zinc sheets. They are to be used as guidelines only. All jobs have different applications, so no warranty on the accuracy or suitability of the information contained below is expressed or implied in any way!
COUNTER TOPS COVERED IN ZINC ARE BEAUTIFUL ADDITIONS TO ANY HOME. THEY ARE UNIQUE IN LOOK AND IN APPLICATION. SINCE THE ZINC SHEET IS A SOLID METAL, IT CAN BE FORMED AND FINISHED IN A VARIETY OF CREATIVE WAYS. THE FINISH IS ONLY LIMITED BY THE IMAGINATION OF THE DESIGNER. EVEN THOUGH THERE ARE MANY WAYS TO FINISH THE ZINC SHEETS, THERE ARE STILL A FEW BASIC TIPS AND SAFETY RULES THAT APPLY TO ALL OF OUR PRODUCTS. Please follow the safety instructions below: PROFESSIONAL LABOR: The zinc sheet supplied by NEY is manufactured with a tight grain rolled metal. Like any metals, the fabrication techniques usually go beyond the simple tools and basic knowledge of the layman. We ask that you seek out a local professional that has experience working with metals before you attempt to fabricate or install these sheets on your own. The professional should know about all safety procedures before working with this product. FORMING: Zinc is a very hard and strong substance. In sheet form it appears to be soft and malleable. This is due to the rolling of the metal through a high pressure "mill". The zinc sheets can be bent and formed around compound curves (we recommend .019" thickness) and it can easily be hammered. It is, however, difficult and dangerous to cut, saw, drill, sand, or even handle (why we recommend a professional). The zinc is extremely sharp on the edges of the sheet. It will easily cut into ones' fingers, so gloves should be worn when handling it. When cutting, chips of zinc will fly off the blade and can cause physical damage due to their razor sharp points. Care should be taken by using a protective apron and face shield as well as appropriate clothing whenever you must cut the material by saw. We highly recommend that the sheets be cut on a professional shear or for the very thin materials (.019") you can score it with a razor knife (carefully!) and bend it until it breaks. ADHESION: Zinc sheets are installed much like any other metal sheet or mica backed metals. You can apply the same type of adhesives used in countertop applications for "Formicatm type" products. Since "contact cements" adhere immediately, we suggest laying down a sheet of waxed paper between the zinc sheet and the glued surface. The wax paper should be carefully slid out from under the zinc sheet only after the zinc sheet is properly positioned. It can be rolled the same way as a mica product for better adhesion. If you are working with sheets that need to be repositioned (i.e. vertical surfaces) then we suggest a commercial grade "Mastic adhesive" such as Bulldogtm cements that will dry over time and allow repositioning.PLEASE confirm with your supplier that there are no chemicals in the glue that are incompatible with zinc and that it will not deteriorate the zinc. (Zinc can create a chemical reaction between certain materials and set up a galvanic, cathodic or anodic reaction). FINISHING: This is what creates simple counter tops as well as beautiful works of art. Since the zinc sheet is formed from solid metal, it can be sanded with a ScotchBrite (3M) or equal quality pad or steel wool and buffed by machine or by hand. We can suggest high polish, satin, turned, burnished, chemically treated, distressed, etc. There are so many ways to finish the surface of the zinc that we do not have time to discuss all of them here. Please contact your decorator, architect, or cabinet professional for help in this area. PRICING: We allow professional discounts and prices are determined by raw material costs at time of order as well as thickness and quantity. Please call us for further information.
