Lead Free Alloys

Lead has been used as a key component in many products for centuries.  It has allowed alloys, such as Old World Pewters or those used in Fashion Jewelry to have unique characteristics by improving castability, finishing and plating.  It has been used extensively in solders, including potable water systems but toxicity studies, showing Lead as being detrimental to human health, became prevalent in the 1970’s and became Law in the 1980’s.  Cadmium was also used in small amounts, along with the Lead to mask any problems that scrap materials, blended in to reduce costs, may have created when casting.

Lead Free Solders

Lead Free Solders for potable water systems was the first area of focus and change.  NEY was instrumental in developing new Lead Free formulas that replaced the Lead with Bismuth and the Cadmium with Silver.  The very first solder developed for the plumbing industry was called SAFEGUARD 50.  It mimicked and replaced many of the 50/50 and 40/60 Tin/Lead solders that were the mainstay of the industry at that time.

Lead Free Pewters

Pewter has contained Lead for centuries, but the American Pewter Guild was established to certify Lead Free Pewters, such as our R8 alloy (791NR8).  Traditionally, these Tin alloys that contained Antimony and Copper were unforgiving.  The difficulty was in the finishing.  Lead and Cadmium would allow the alloys to cast without porosity.  When Lead Free Pewter alloys, such as Britannia were used, the results were less than impressive.  A solution had to be found that would allow the quality to remain without toxic Lead additions.   For NEY it was an easy transition into the Pewter and Fashion Jewelry Industry by using similar Lead Free formulas developed years before for the plumbing industry.  The first generation of Environmentally Friendly alloys from NEY (EN alloys) was developed in the late 1980’s.  With the additions of Bismuth, these alloys were a vast improvement for casting.  Not stopping there, NEY also developed Antimony Free alloys in anticipation of new laws regulating it.  We created our most popular alloy to date, the ENTB (798NENTB).  This alloy is certified to meet the most stringent low Lead requirements, as low as 40 parts per million (40 ppm).

Lead Free Low Melting Alloys

For most applications, a specific temperature is required when designing a Low Melt alloy.  Eutectic alloys almost always contain Lead and or Cadmium, but there are alternatives.  NEY can supply the most popular Lead and Cadmium Free Low Melt alloy called NEYLO 281.  This alloy has a melting point at 281F.  If an application requires an even lower melting point and still remain Lead Free, we can offer our NEYLO 174 with a melting temperature of 174 F.  Although it is an expensive alloy to produce, due to additions of Indium, it may be the only alternative solution to a critical engineering need. 

Lead Free Babbitts

There are many Babbitt Alloys that were designed when Lead was prevalent and used as an inexpensive addition to create standard formulas.  To this day, some of these formulas can be found in Industry wide ASTM or QQ specifications.  But Lead is being phased out in most manufacturing operations, due mainly to health concerns.  NEY can supply many Lead Free NEYLITE Babbitt alloys, including the popular ASTM Grades 1, 2 and 3.  Engineers are developing new bearings that will utilize these Lead Free Babbitt’s and still be self-lubricating.
